Contrary to popular belief, basting is not a necessary step in the prep process, according to the experts from Butterball’s Turkey Talk Line.
Instead, the experts recommend using a mix of butter and herbs to season your bird. In order for the butter to do its job though, you need to get it under the turkey’s skin. That’s because the skin is waterproof, so rubbing anything on top of it will do absolutely nothing.
To save you from what can be a very messy process of rubbing butter onto your turkey with your bare hands, the Butterball experts say to freeze a mix of butter and herbs. Once frozen, chop the butter into small discs and place them underneath the skin.
Then, when you cook the turkey, the butter will melt and coat the bird, resulting in meat that’s both flavorful and juicy.
